DSM IV

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-IV (Paperback ) "The DSM IV provides the only comprehensive classification of all recognized psychiatric disorders in print. This edition features increased emphasis on multicultural influences, development across the lifespan, and substance abuse disorders. More than 1,000 clinicians and researchers have contributed to the revision of this classic reference."

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-IV-TR (Text Revision)"Since 1992, there have been many advances in knowledge of psychiatric illnesses. The DSM-IV-TR spans the bridge between DSM-IV and DSM-V, to ensure that the most relevant new information since the DSM-IV literature review in 1992 was incorporated and to enhance the educational value. Specifically, new information on associated features, including associated laboratory and physical findings, has been added for many of the disorders. Sections on prevalence, gender/age/culture, course and familial pattern have also been revised to reflect research findings. More comprehensive differential diagnoses have been incorporated for many of the disorders."

Dsm-IV Made Easy : The Clinician's Guide to Diagnosis by James Morrison "Simplifies and interprets the latest Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) and teaches professionals and clinicians how to apply the new criteria to patients. Explains how to derive a complete five-axis diagnosis, and covers diagnostic processes for each DSM-IV category, emphasizing key traits and factors and using case vignettes and evaluations. Includes chapter guides outlining every diagnosis, cross-references to disorders with similar symptoms, tips highlighting diagnostic information, and coding notes."

DSM-IV internet companion:  A Complete Guide to Over 1500 websites offering information on Mental Illness, keyed to DSM-IV by M. Robert Morrison & Robert F. Stamps (A good resource for both laymen and mental health professionals. Also includes resources such as email groups, etc. One caution though, is that this book came out in 1998 and the internet is growing rapidly, so be sure you check out some newer sites on the Internet as well). "The authors of this directory of Web sites related to DSM-IV disorders have provided a review of the relevant sites and have reviewed them in terms of their usefulness. There are chapters on general psychology and psychiatry sites and the rest is devoted to specific sites in the DSM-IV category."

The Therapist's Notebook for Families: Solution-Oriented Exercises for Working with Parents, Children and Adolescents by Bob Bertolino and Gary Schultheis NEW book out! I cannot recommend this book enough. It contains exercises - questions in assisting people with change and dealing with problems. Excellent aid for therapists for treating clients of all ages. P. Bad Therapy: Master Therapists Share Their Worst Failures by Jeffrey Kottler (Editor), Jon Carlson (Editor) "Instead of simply showing the rather effortless and constant success of renowned practitioners- an impression that can be left by typical books, videos and workshops- Bad Therapy reveals, with shocking honesty, their worst mistakes.
Jeffrey Kottler and Jon Carlson, who include their own therapy mishaps, interview twenty of the world's most famous practitioners who discuss their mistakes, misjudgments, and miscalculations on working with clients. Told through narratives, the failures are related with candor to expose the human side of leading therapists. Each therapist shares their regrets, what they learned from the experience, what others can learn from their mistakes and the benefits of speaking openly about bad therapy."

The New View of Self: How Genes and Neurotransmitters Shape Your Mind, Your Personality, and Your Mental Health by Larry J. Siever, M.D., with William Fruch (Excellent book describing the malfunctions of the brain in regard to depression, personality disorder, obsessive -compulsive disorders, schizophrenia, etc. You will learn as you read this book, why medications are necessary along with therapy. Recently published and appears up-to-date on the latest research. I highly recommend this book for those who want to truly understand this illness).
