Q. My 17 year old son has been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder. I have always had my
doubts about his diagnosis, and even though he is on several medications, he doesn't seem
to be getting any better. He has been hospitalized twice for suicidal ideation. I have
researched borderline personality and this seems to be more accurate. Currently he is
taking Tegretol, Paxil, Lithium, Wellbutrin. He was also diagnosed with seizure disorder
and he has low thyroid. I am DESPERATE to say the least. His violent outrages are
more unpredictable than ever, he isn't able to focus to do school work (he is currently
home taught) and he has no desire to get a job. His therapist as well as his psychiatrist
have advised me to call the police and have him put in jail. I am his mother! How can
they suggest such a thing? His father is also borderline/bipolar or something, which is why
I left him. Please help me. I am at the end of my rope. I feel like my son is dying and
there is nothing I can do about it.
A. I wish there was a way to help you now. The best I can suggest is to take
your son to a University Hospital setting, and see if there is anyone there
that works on BPD. Anything I tell you ever the net without examining him
would be unfair. It sounds like you feel he is BPD, so you need to find
someone close to your home that knows how to treat it.
