Q. My concern is regarding my nephew who is 4. His parents recently divorced
and his mother diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. The little boy scratches and
digs his nails in his face when he gets mad. Two examples that I know: When
he could not have a toy that belonged to my son he got mad and right before
my eyes, started digging at his face. Another time; when he was put out in
a "time out" situation by time his mother he scratched his face.
A. Not sure what he has going on. If the self-injury is non-painful when done,
it is probably BPD spectrum. Do not know of any websites to help. I cannot
begin to tell you what is best with so little data. Sounds like he needs a
psychiatric evaluation as soon as possible. Start there, and see what the
psychiatrist has to say.
