Q. I have an eleven year old son diagnosed ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and ODD (Oppositional Defiance Disorder). Am wondering if he has been misdiagnosed. What are the symptoms of an 11 year old BPD? State is institutionalizing him on Monday. Need help immediately. Thank you in advance for your information. He was in residential care for 13 months and he is worse now after only 3 months being out than when he went in. What would be your recommendation for the best place for care for my son if he is BPD? Place for ADHD, ODD?

A. There are no studies on kids with BPD. Essentially, it does not matter what we call your son, it is just a matter of getting him better. In the studies we wrote up, there were a few children/adolescents on medications for BPD. I would use the same medications for children I use in adults, and at the same doses (that is what our small trial showed. Even 8 year olds needed the same dose as a 30 year old).
