Q. I have a problem with Nausea and need the Doctors help. I see my own MD late April. My medications are Trazodone 300mg hs, Effexor 75mg hs, And Buspar 5mg am, hs, and 2 PRNs. I was on Risperdal and that has antimetic properties which decreased my nausea. I have nausea often and I think it may be due in part by strong emotions and stress. I have been on my medications a long time, so I don't think its them. It could also be physical. No one has helped me yet. I would appreciate any help.
A. I do not know much about you, but will give you a few options based on the data you sent. There are a few possibilities, and make sure you go over them with your doctor. One is to increase the Effexor as you are probably not on enough to work for BPD. It is also possible that the nausea is a form of bulimia, and higher dosages of Effexor will help with this. If the Effexor is causing the nausea, you may want to change to Effexor XR since it has only half as much nausea associated with it, and only costs a fraction more to use. Using Remeron to treat your illness may be a possibility, too, as it has clear anti-nausea properties. It does, however, cause weight gain. Talk these over with your clinician.
