Q. I will be teaching a course on Child Psychopathology in the spring and was wondering if you have any resources on how BPD effects children (either as a direct diagnosis, Items that may be signs of a later diagnosis, or family dynamic).

A. I do not deal with children very much, and have seen little work anywhere to suggest any psychotherapy helps them much. Most of the work says kids in bad environments come out poorly because of the bad environment. They attribute the BPD in the children to being learned from the environment. It is an association. The kids might have BPD because they have the same genes as their BPD parents. My knowledge in the area of children is limited. I will beg off on this one. You may want to write to the Institute for Rational Living in New York City and ask Albert Ellis et al for any readings they have.
