Q. Is it common for abused children to develop BPD in adolescence? And what is the recovery rate for BPD? Will it effect the person for their whole lives?

A. BPD is more common in abused children. It is hard to tell if the abuse caused the BPD or if the children were in an environment where they would be abused because their parent had the same biological problems and passed on the genes to the kids. The abuse would not cause the BPD, the genes transferred at conception would. The abuse is bad, but not causative of the BPD.

Bottom line is that we cannot change the abuse, and are left to clean up the mess. I would medicate the children or young adults, enter them into therapy if the medications help. If the meds do not help, the type of therapy would be different.
