New Hope for People with Borderline Personality Disorder: Your Friendly, Authoritive Guide to the Latest in Traditional and Complementary Solutions by Neil R. Bockian, Nora Elizabeth Villagran

This book is easily the best book out there for the consumer in regards to the BPD. It is also the best book for families out there for BPD.
I have kept up with all of the BPD books that come out. I just finished this book and I'm not only pleased, I'm stunned!
This book discusses EVERYTHING a consumer would want to know and more. Easy to read. Filled with knowledge about what BPD is, treatment, a special outstanding section for families - you name it, it is here. This book I know will further not only consumer's knowlege of the BPD but it is helpful not only for families but I believe clinician's will learn a great deal for treatment.
The family section reads totally without stigma, is understanding and will help you to understand that you are not alone and some things you can do to help. Stop Walking on Eggshells is a good book and very helpful but it contains some stigma and reads without the heart that this book has. Eggshells just went down a peg when this book came out, sorry to say as I advocated for that book for a long time. There is no blaming in this book, only help for the families.
If you have the BPD or are a family member, this book is priceless. In many cases it is us who have to teach our mental health clinicians how to treat us. I highly recommend getting educated about this disorder and understand that it is treatable. The information is here in this book.

Stop Walking on Eggshells: Taking Your Life Back When Someone You Care About Has Borderline Personality Disorder  by Paul Mason M.S. et al
This is the only book written of its kind that I am aware of, and it is not only very well written, but I believe will help many families that are being hurt by borderline behavior. This book will assist families in understanding their loved one's behavior and thinking. It will help them understand what is going on inside the borderline when sometimes all the family can see is chaos. I believe this book will empower many families. It is important to remember that borderlines are not bad people and they do not set out to hurt the very ones we love, but rather their cognitive distortions and chaotic behavior of course hurt those around them severely. This book should help you find your way.

Understanding the Borderline Mother: Helping Her Children Transcend the Intense, Unpredictable, and Volatile Relationship by Christine Ann Lawson Ph. D.

"Dr. Christine Ann Lawson vividly describes how mothers who suffer from borderline personality disorder produce children who may flounder in life even as adults, futilely struggling to reach the safety of a parental harbor, unable to recognize that their borderline parent lacks a pier, or even a discernible shore.

Four character profiles describe different symptom clusters that include the waif mother, the hermit mother, the queen mother, and the witch. Children of borderlines are at risk for developing this complex and devastating personality disorder themselves. Dr. Lawson's recommendations for prevention include empathic understanding of the borderline mother and early intervention with her children to ground them in reality and counteract the often dangerous effects of living with a "make-believe" mother.

The author identifies four separate composites or profiles for the different kinds of borderline mothers; thereby being especially useful in exploding the myth that all borderlines act and sound alike. Many persons suffering from this ailment go undiagnosed because they do not threaten suicide, or engage in otherwise self-destructive behavior."

From the Back Cover "Childhood lived with a borderline mother results in
an unspeakable tragedy, few of the child's developmental needs are met because the mother cannot be a parent. Consequently, the child is
programmed for a lifelong struggle against failure. For over twenty years, people have shared their own agonizing stories with me, looking to my journey for a sense of hope. The compassionate understanding and professional assistance in this book are a road map out of failure."

Women Who Hurt Themselves: A Book of Hope and Understanding by Dusty Miller

I think this book is a must read for anyone who is treating or in a relationship with a women her engages in risky behaviors or self-mutilation. It puts the I don't understand into, ok I get it a bit. I don't think it is an end all book since the trauma and abuse often goes deeper than this book does. I do however recommend it as a starting point to other more triggering books. I think this book along with being a must read is also a must keep for referral for yourself and family and to give to people who want to understand better the journey of these tortured women.

Emotional Incest Syndrome: What to Do When a Parent's Love Rules Your Life by Dr. Patricia Love, Patricia Love, Jo Robinson

"From Dr. Patricia Love, a ground-breaking work that identifies, explores and treats the harmful effects that emotionally and psychologically invasive parents have on their children, and provides a program for overcoming the chronic problems that can result."
"I have read many. many self-help books...but this is the only one that focuses specifically on this complex and often overwhelming problem. The author exactingly describes "incest" scenarios and the possible background of your parents that makes them the way they are. I'm now in my 40s, and still struggling with the issues the author discusses...this book has been a tremendous resource. It's comforting to know I'm not alone...now if only we could all form our own support group!"
