Q. I am a 34 year old w/BPD. I was diagnosed 11 years ago. I choose not to LIVE in my diagnosis and that is why I believe I am "well" today.
BUT,
Could you tell me where I can get information about BPD and memory. While it is true that once a BPD reaches her thirties, life significantly improves (understatement)....I do have the lasting effect of memory loss. Every day feels brand new. There is no continuity--only glimpses of past conversations and I do not remember much of much childhood---just emotions not events. Meanwhile, I have excellent recall at work, at school, etc. Is it that I'm not listening....am I checked out? Can you explain what caused this and why this is so. Is this common with Borderlines? The only medication I have ever been on is Paxil for about 4 months. I have been incredibly stubborn about ever taking meds.
A. I do not know about any studies on this topic, but they may have been done by
psychologists. Trouble with BPD is that there are many forms of the illness.
Like diabetes, it may represent an illness that has one cause in any
individual, but 10-15 different overall causes that can manifest in the same
way. Thus, there may be 15 different kinds of memory problems or none at all
in some folks. Really good question with no answer of which I am aware.
