Biological
Unhappiness by Leland M. Heller, Foreword by myself |
(I
felt very fortunate to be asked to write the foreword to this book as the
teachings of Dr. Heller have literally changed my life. This book includes new
information about the BPD, not only in diagnosing biological causes of
unhappiness - BPD, depression, bipolar disorder, cyclothymia, panic disorder,
generalized anxiety disorder, phobias, attention deficit disorder, ADHD,
obsessive compulsive disorder, obsessive compulsive personality disorder, etc. -
but in their treatment as well. Highly recommended). "Biological
Unhappiness explains the biology and recovery process for the most common
"mental illnesses" that are causing so many of today's societal
problems. These "illnesses" are very treatable, and need (and deserve)
destigmatization. The public needs to understand the facts and the true nature
of what's really going on. Biological Unhappiness is written for the lay
person."

Over Mood: Change How You Feel by Changing the Way You
Think by Dennis Greenberger, Ph.D.,
Christine A. Padesky, Ph.D. |
(Cognitive
therapy workbook which therapists recommend their clients use.
Cognitive therapy is highly recommended for the treatment of BPD.
The workbook "teaches you to identify your thoughts, moods,
behaviors, and physical reactions in small situations as well as
during major events in your life. You learn to test the meaning and
usefulness of various thoughts you have during the day and to change
the thinking patterns that keep you locked into dysfunctional moods,
behaviors, or relationship interactions. In addition, you learn how
to make changes in your life when your thoughts are alerting you to
problems that need to be solved." I recommend this workbook. I
think cognitive therapy is an excellent tool in recovering from the
BPD). "A hands-on workbook for therapy clients suffering
from depression, panic attacks, anxiety, eating disorders, substance
abuse, and relationship problems, using case examples and written
exercises to help clients understand and use cognitive therapy
methods. Includes sample worksheets and blank worksheets for
reproduction. Can be used as a framework for treatment, an adjunct
to treatment, or to pinpoint specific skills development."

Shorter
Term Treatments for Borderline Personality Disorders by John D. Preston
Psy.D. |
(A book written primarily for clinicians
but I also feel BPDs can learn from it. Initially, he presents a
very important problem in treating BPDs. One that I have always
felt. When discussing long term therapy, he states "..I suspect
that only a tiny percent of borderline patients can afford such
treatment." Also discussed are the limitations that some HMOs have
that prevent treating the BPD. He also states "Borderline patients
are often so dysfunctional that they do not have the ability to
earn a good income and/or they experience significant occupational
instability...The bottom line is this: These people who suffer so
much cannot afford long term treatment..." He discusses BPD
symptomology,
therapeutic strategies and even discusses how the limbic system
in the brain is damaged and how medication can help). "Most
books addressing the treatment of borderline personality disorder
recommend intensive treatment. Let's get real. People with this
type of disorder suffer tremendously and lead chaotic lives. One
manifestation of the chaos is unstable employment and marginal incomes.
For 99% of borderline people, long term, intensive treatment is
financially unrealistic. This book discusses practical approaches
primarily drawn from cognitive behavioral therapy and psychopharmacology
that are reasonable alternatives in treating this very difficult
group of clients. The author's use of the concept "shorter term"
refers to weekly psychotherapy lasting from 3-12 months. This book
is well written, clear, and practical." |

No More : How to Stop Controlling Others and Start Caring for Yourself
by Melody Beattie |
(I cannot emphasize enough how important
this book is. It is a classic! This book assisted me in getting
out of a bad relationship. This book helped me get my mind off of
other people and back onto myself and onto my own needs. I was not
even aware of what my needs where as I was so focused on others.
If you feel you are codependent in any way, without a doubt I recommend
this book highly. It will set you free to be yourself). A reader
from Beacon NY says "This book saved my sanity, my relationship,
maybe even my life. I was going through major upsets in my relationship
due to a partner's addiction. I was trying to "fix the world" one
painful day at a time. When nothing happened except for me to lose
hope, trust, faith and love, I turned to a friend for advice. She
recommended this book to me. I was skeptical to try yet another
DO IT YOURSELF book to fix what was wrong with me, but this one
opened my eyes. For the first time ever, I saw the patterns of my
actions leading me straight to heartache and frustration. The descriptions
were right on target, I saw myself in every list. It was scary,
yet encouraging, because I did not feel alone, nor did I feel I
was too far gone to be helped. This book will be a fixture on my
nightstand to get me through the weaker points in my life. Whenever
I need to take a reality check and think of ME instead of that other
person, I open the pages and let it heal me. Thank you, Ms. Beattie!" |
