Life at the Border: Understanding and Recovering from the Borderline Personality Disorder by Leland M. Heller, M.D.

(Highly recommended. Brings to light new information that the BPD is a medical disorder that can be treated. This was in fact the very first book that allowed me to see the BPD for what it is - a medical disorder and how to treat it. Dr. Heller discussed what BPD really is and displays much compassion for people with this disorder. He discusses neurological abnormalities in the BPD - eeg findings, visual problems, etc. He discusses psychiatric symptoms and medications. For the first time, while reading his book, I realized there was hope. His book is a a must read not only for the borderline but the for the families and the clinicians as well). "Explains for the layman - with or without the BPD - what it's like to live with the borderline personality disorder, and how to recover. Includes explanations of biology, medications, therapy, and other diagnoses. An extensive bibliography and glossary are included. Life at the Border was placed on the recommended reading list by the National Institute of Mental Health and is a reference book at NIMH."

The Borderline Personality: Vision and Healing by Nathan Schwartz-Salant

(A reader from Knoxville, TN says "This book, written by a Jungian therapist, has given me almost all of the words and concepts I have always needed to express the terrible inner darkness, formlessness, and tumult of suffering from BPD. Therapy and meds were a godsend, but they were only palliatives. There seemed no hope of penetrating to the very source of this overwhelming disorder, of understanding it, and perhaps even curing myself of it someday.

Mr. (Dr.?) Schwartz-Salant's compassion, clarity, analysis, and ideas have given me not only hope, but an entirely new (to me) way of looking at the problem, and substantive directions in which to work toward resolution, both on my own and with the few therapists who can/should attempt to work with borderlines.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough, and I hope it helps others as much as it has helped me."

Imbroglio : Rising to the Challenges of Borderline Personality Disorder
imbroglio rising to the challenges of the borderline personality disorder by janice cauwels (Large, comprehensive book. Strongly recommended! Includes many different schools of thought about what the BPD is, it's etiology (cause) and different modes of treatment. A must read if you want to understand the full picture of BPD. It does not offer one opinion but attempts to show you all current opinions and what they are based on). "This book is probably a good introduction to Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) for someone who is first reading about this disorder. Personally, I was looking for something a little more rigorous and authoritative. The author admits to having no special expertise in the subject, but has interviewed experts and others to arrive at her understanding of BPD. If you're looking for a top-notch, clear and understandable discussion of BPD."

An Adult Child's Guide to What's 'Normal' by John C. Friel, Linda Friel
"(A practical guide to begin dealing with the pain and trauma of being raised in a dysfunctional family. Your parents may not have been able to teach you lifeskills but it is not too late to learn them now. This book will help the reader to learn how to respond to the challenges, problems and traps that they are faced with daily." "Finally! A book that gives us what to do right instead of just what's wrong. As a counselor I highly recommend it to anyone who has had any kind of dysfunction in their family)."
