Bipolar
Puzzle Solution : A Mental Health Client's Perspective : 187 Answers
to Questions Asked by Support Group Members About Living With Manic-depression
by Bryan L. Court, Gerald E. Nelson "(Answering questions
about bipolar illness and how to live with it, this book addresses
187 recovery-related questions over the broad range of interest
to the patient, family, and friend, and utilizes the same question-and-answer
format heard in bipolar support groups. Subjects cover a wide spectrum,
including: understanding the illness; treatment methods; medications;
attitudes; acceptance; faith; living problems; relationships with
friends, family, and psychiatrists; support groups; disability;
hospitalization; and employment difficulties. The answers were obtained
from a psychiatrist, a labor law attorney, and a hospital worker.
A psychiatrist (Nelson) reviewed the answers to the questions and
provided a response to each section of the book)."
Manic
Depressive Illness by Frederick K. Goodwin, Kay Redfield Jamison "(This
book is everything you need to know about manic-depressive illness
that your doctor doesn't have time to tell you. Dr. Kay Redfield
Jamison has a passion for the subject and the knowledge to back
it up)."
An
Unquiet Mind by Kay Redfield Jamison (The author, a psychiatrist,
tells her own story dealing with manic depression. You will instantly
fall in love with Kay as she tells her very painful story. The book
provides much needed hope for bipolars. Kay has severe Bipolar I
with psychotic episodes and due to her medication, her therapy,
and the supportive people in her life, she lives a very normal and
happy life today. To me, the book was very comforting. You will
feel less alone in your suffering. I also recommend the book for
families as well as it will help families to understand just how
the BP is manifested in this woman's life and what support system
this woman has to help her deal with her illness. I highly recommend
this book).
My
Stolen Innocence by Lynnora Sumblin "(My Stolen Innocence
is the story of a victim who in spite of her adversities, refuses
to be fenced in by life's circumstances. Lynnora Sumblin has triumphed
over a troubled childhood, deeply scared as a victim of incest between
the ages of nine and fifteen. This experience led to a manic depressive
condition in her young adult years that required years of medical,
psychological and spiritual treatment and counseling. She shares
in vivid testimony her travails as well as her recovery through
the power of Spiritual nurture)."
Manic
By Midnight by Faye Joy Shannon(Excellent book.
Author openly discusses her life - before, after and during manic
& depressive episodes. Reveals the tremendous negative impact
the BP has had on her life, and those around her.
FIVE
STAR REVIEW WITH AMAZON. I had a very difficult time putting this
book down as it is wonderfully written).
Overcoming
Depression And Manic Depression (Bipolar Depression) The Non - Drug
Approach by Paul A Wider, Reuben Henriquez (Illustrator) "(Overcoming
Depression and Manic Depression (Bipolar Depression) The Non-Drug
Approach" will help you get well. This book is invaluable for people
who cannot or will not take medication, but want to get well. It
is also a must for those who use medication, since medication alone
is not a cure-all.
The
author himself has worked through and healed from his own depression
and manic depression. Wider is also an MA in counseling)."
A
Brilliant Madness: Living With Manic-Depressive Illness
by Patty Duke (Patty tells her life story about her bipolar disorder,
panic disorder, hallucinations, etc. She also discusses the disorder
itself. "Patty Duke's book A Brilliant Madness is the first real
good information about bi-polar disorder I have been able to put
my hands on! The medical backup information that Gloria Hochman
contributes has given me an almost unlimited list of resources to
also turn to. I read this book because my 9yr old son and my current
husband are both diagnosed as bi-polar, but as I read this intense
book I was amazed by feelings of fear, relief, sadness, and anger.
I was able to relate to much of what I read and began to see myself
which is scary. I now want to find help for all of us as our area
is devoid of support groups and other local means of coping with
this illness. This book is truly "Brilliant" in both the writing
style and the content and has given me some hope in an otherwise
bleak future. I strongly recommend this book to anyone where Manic
Depression has touched their lives)."
