Q. I recently met a young woman walking down our street. She told me of her
bipolar illness and went on to tell me that she was 5 months pregnant. She
seemed so drugged so I asked her what she was taking. She told me Haldol and
Zoloft and she went on to say that she was worried about the baby. I told her
to talk to her doc but she said she doesn't see him again until next month.
Just wondering what you might be able to tell us. She is 21 years old and
has a very sad past. I am concerned to if children's services shouldn't be
monitoring her a bit.
A. . I cannot comment on her dosages or why she is taking what she is taking. Both
medications, however, look pretty safe during pregnancy. As with anything, it
is a cost benefits analysis. One must weigh the potential risks against the
gains. The risk of mania and its consequences to the baby are probably worse
than the risks of the medications in her treating clinician's eyes.
