Mental Health Matters

  Q. My 13 year old daughter has been diagnosed Bipolar 1 rapid cycler and has again had her medications changed. She takes Neurontin 900mg, Paxil 20mg, Trazadone 100mg, and Geodon 20mg. My question is in regards to the Geodon, a new antipsychotic. I find no information in any of my books about it and would like as much specific information about it as I can.

  A. Geodon has just been out for a month or so. There is not a great deal of data available on it. It does, however, cause much less sedation and much less weight gain than other antipsychotics. It has not been studied in Bipolar I that I know of (tests are underway), but it is a great choice because of its good side effect profile.
