  Q. Been diagnosed for hypermanic bipolar this past year. Using lithium, Zyprexa and another drug. Recently became pregnant- Explain the dangers and what I should be doing.

  A. You need to talk to the doctor prescribing the lithium immediately, and let them know about the pregnancy. There are many options available to you, and it is impossible to tell you which is right with any certainty. Your doctor knows you better than me, so start with him or her.

Your primary concern is making sure your illness is treated. If you become manic during a pregnancy or depressed, it is not good for you or the fetus. It is a difficult time, but one that is manageable with good supervision. Let your doctor know right away.
