Borderline Personality Disorder Today Advocacy Program

"Mental Health Today is embarking upon an ambitious new program to assist those with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) to receive the medical/psychiatric and therapeutic therapies/and social supports in order to modulate and cope with the complexities of living with Borderline Personality Disorder.

This program, officially titled, "The BPD Today Advocacy Program," is being launched in response to the many people accessing the BPD Today Borderline Personality Forum who are frustrated in their attempts to find appropriate treatment/ medications/and social supports more often than not with no medical insurance to assist them with the expense of covering such needed services.

As governmental programs such as Medicaid/Social Security Disability/Social Security Supplemental Income Disability/Medicare/ State Disability programs/ and State Welfare programs/and private insurance programs tighten their eligibility requirements for inclusion in their programs and services, the internet self-help support message bulletin boards , and on-line chatrooms are seeing an explosion of people with borderline personality disorder and other mental/physical illnesses using the message boards and chatrooms as de facto support groups and even 'self-help therapy' in an attempt to bring some order to their already stressful lives.

Recognizing that on-line message boards and chatrooms cannot serve as 'therapy groups' for these individuals, we at Mental Health Today have embarked on this very ambitious program of advocacy and resource Referral.

Currently, we are recruiting volunteers to act as advocates for individuals who have the BPD. An advocate may be a professional mental health professional OR an individual who has lived with BPD and is now at a stable point in their own journey of living with BPD.

Advocates will work with individuals in their geographic area to access whatever services are needed. This will range from assisting the individual in being connected to a psychiatrist/therapist/subsidized housing if necessary, finding financial support/job training and placement, etc. Basically the advocate will do whatever it takes for the individual to achieve a level of stability in order to move forward in life. This is NOT to imply that the person with BPD will sit back and be infantilized but rather that through the mentoring offered by the Advocate will be empowered to access the services needed to stabilize their life.

The BPD individual will work in conjunction with The advocate to help themselves. This entire concept is based upon the premise not of giving a person a slice of bread to feed themselves for a day but of teaching them how to bake the loaf of bread in order learn how to feed themselves for life.

In conjunction with The BPD Today Advocacy program, Mental Health Today has also started an entire Resource Forum dedicated solely to listing programs available at both the national, state, county, and city level which can assist individuals in resolving a problem or meeting a need they have in their life. The Mental Health Today Resource Forum is actually a series of several bulletin boards which will have nothing but lists of programs and resources available (some well known and others quite obscure)."
