Borderline Personality Disorder and Post Traumatic Stress

by Erin O'Hearn

Holly Constable said, "I lived in a very abusive home at the age of 9. Sexual abuse started, there was a lot of physical abuse."

Constable believes these are some of the things that caused her mental illness. She was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and post traumatic stress syndrome about three years ago.

Michel Kimball of the Clearview Center said, "Post traumatic stress is also seen in people who are diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. It usually means that something pretty horrific has happened to them during their formative years."

After years of abuse, Constable moved out of her home but started exhibiting harmful behaviors.

She explained, "I started drinking and using drugs to get rid of that uncomfortability that I wasn't really sure why I had it. It was just really difficult for me and I started self-mutilating at an early age because I really didn't want to feel the emotional pain anymore. It was much easier to feel the physical pain."
