Q: "I have done a lot of research on personality disorders and I strongly believe my brother in-law suffers from a combination of personality disorders. I was wondering if you had any advice on how I can convince him to see a doctor because he does not think there's anything wrong with him."

A: "Thanks for your question. Unfortunately, there's little one can do to convince someone else to seek formal help or treatment. Like most things in life, one has to be self-motivated and "buy in" to a course of action to make it a success. Even if you could persuade him to see a professional, he would likely resist further treatment and/or not follow through with any recommendations made. The suggestions that I do have include speaking with other family members to check your suspicions and concerns and/or gently speaking to him about it over the course of the next few months. If he is truly in a dangerous or self-destructive situation, you may need to reach out to other family members to organize a "family intervention", in which you would meet together, share your joint concerns with him, and ask him to seek help."
