Q. Sometimes I turn to overeating until it hurts. I take part in OA, but it doesn't seem as the program works so well when I am into that. My therapist has only said that overeating isn't the worst thing I do. Any suggestions?

45, married. woman, mother, diagnosed with BPD

A: While your therapist may not believe that overeating is the "worst" thing you do, it is nevertheless a serious problem that - I'm sure - impacts your life significantly. I am not an expert in this area, but successful treatment will address what are likely core issues of fear, insecurity, or low self-esteem that the food is designed to appease.  Most treatment programs emphasize a decreased focus on eating, which is crucial, but keep in mind that equally as important is the substitution of other, more positive behaviors that you find fulfilling which add meaning to your life. Good luck.
