• frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment or rejection 
• a pattern of unstable and/or intense interpersonal relationships characterized by alternating between the extremes of idealizing the person and de-valuing the person 
• impulsivity (e.g. spending, reckless driving, binge eating) 
• recurrent suicidal behavior or threats - or self-mutilating behavior 
• chronic feelings of emptiness; no sense of one's own needs, desires, or boundaries 
• "mood swings" - going from contentment to irritability or anger very quickly 
• inappropriate, intense anger - or "rages"

The treatment for BPD typically involves medication, individual psychotherapy, and often, cognitive-behavioral work to teach the individual better skills that will enable them to get along with others and regulate his or her emotions. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is one kind of skills training therapy that has been shown to be effective.
