Q: "Do borderlines generally need medications for the rest of their life like bipolars do? I am currently diagnosed as borderline with mild bipolar. Some things I read say BPDs don't need medication at all; others say sometimes, and some say definitely. My BPD is my worse diagnosis. Thanks for your time."

A: "I am not a physician, so I won't attempt to answer your question definitively; however, the reason you're getting a variety of answers is that there is no one formula that can be used for everyone with your diagnosis. Every individual is different, has a different set of symptoms, and responds differently to medication. In general, I would say that many individuals with your diagnosis benefit from taking medication throughout their lifetime, but it would be hard to tell if they are treating just the BPD or just the bipolar. Others are able to cut out medications entirely later in life without any negative ramifications. Your primary medical provider should be able to give you a more comprehensive answer, and one tailored to your exact diagnosis and situation."
