I am 55 and have received outpatient treatment off and on for 20 years for Depression, Anxiety, etc. and two years ago was given the PTSD diagnosis.

Now I am unable to work. I had multiple rapes in my early20's, was abused by ex husbands, etc., and also developed Fibromyalgia, headaches and stomach disorders.

Recently I saw a new psychiatrist for one hour, and she assigned me the diagnosis of Borderline.

I had none of these problems in childhood,
and in my opinion do not meet the criteria. I have never abused substances, self-mutilated, attempted suicide (but had ideation), and have no documented mental illness in my family. I developed binge eating, but not until age 50 when I was menopausal, depressed and going through a divorce.

Otherwise, my weight was stable my entire life except for a short period of being underweight after the rapes. I do not overspend, gamble, feel I must have someone in my life, or have an identity problem.

If I were borderline, it seems other therapists and psychiatrists would have caught it by now. Now that this in my records, how can I counter it and prove it is not correct? Since this diagnosis is
detrimental and could cause loss of my disability claim, can I take action against this psychiatrist for wrongful diagnosis?

A. A: Unfortunately, without knowing more about your situation, it's impossible for me to know why this professional diagnosed you with BPD or
whether or not his diagnosis is correct.

If you have questions about how this diagnosis could effect your disability claim and/or how to prevent this, you should consult an attorney. Try to find one with mental health expertise - or at least someone who is familiar with disability claims.
